We all know that rubies are considered precious. But how precious are they?
Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.
This quote from the bible demonstrates the extent to which rubies have been considered valuable throughout history. Also referred to as ‘king of the gemstones’, rubies are one of the four precious gemstones found on Earth – the other three being diamonds, emeralds and sapphires. Rubies still command a hefty price today. Not only are they relatively scarce, but it is uncommon to find rubies that have no inclusions. Ironically these inclusions are mainly caused by the very substance that imbues rubies with their magnificent colour – chromium.
The word ‘Ruby’ originates from the Latin word ‘rubens’ which means ‘red’. Rubies are found in many shades of red. Some shades are more valuable than others. Burmese rubies lie at the top-end ofthe ruby spectrum. Whilst their name does not necessarily mean the rubies originate from Burma, it indicates the ruby is a rich, full red with a slight blue-ish hue as typical of rubies from this region of of the world. These rubies are also referred to as ‘pigeon-blood-red’. Rubies come in a variety of shades of red including pinkish, purplish, orangey and brownish red. As mentioned, inclusions are common in rubies and do not impact on their quality unless they decrease the transparency of the stone. Most rubies are treated with heat to enhance their colour and clarity.
Red symbolises fire, passion and love. This makes Ruby jewellery an ideal gift to that special person in your life. Rubies look stunning in earrings, pendants, bracelets and rings and would make excellent Valentine’s Day gifts. Some couples opt for ruby engagement rings. Jessica Simpson’s ruby
engagement ring, for example, features a rich red ruby between two pear-shaped diamonds set in yellow gold. In Jessica’s case, rubies are also her July birthstone.
Rubies are the anniversary stone for 40 years of marriage. Many couples choose to have a ruby ring made to mark this occasion. A wonderful gift option for this anniversary is a Half Eternity ring (stones across the top section of the band) alternating rubies and diamonds.
